Hairy Indigo Seed (Indigofera hirsuta) — 50 Lbs.
Indigofera hirsuta (Hairy Indigo) is a reseeding summer annual legume that can reach 4 to 7 feet tall when left ungrazed. Valued primarily for grazing, it is often allowed to grow into the fall to provide high-quality forage for weaned calves or dry cows, and its foliage is also a nutritious browse for goats. Beyond pasture use, hairy indigo serves effectively as a cover crop or green manure that suppresses nematodes harmful to subsequent plantings, and it has been harvested for hay and silage in some systems. This variety establishes easily and requires minimal management. Optimal sowing falls between April and July. Hairy indigo prefers soils with a pH of up to 6 and will not persist on acidic ground; liming may be necessary to reach the proper pH. It performs well on well-drained sandy sites and on land that is too dry for many other legumes, but it is not suitable for soils that remain flooded for extended periods. Seeding guidelines: Plant 8 Lbs per acre. For stronger establishment, sow 15 lbs. of seed per acre. When broadcasting seed, follow with disking, rolling, or packing of the soil to improve germination and stand development.
