Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass Seed — 5 Lbs.
Very dark green Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass seed, sold in a 5 lb bag. Plant at a rate of 2 - 3 lbs per 1,000 Sq. ft. This variety is slow to resume growth until late spring but shows good tolerance to high temperatures once active. Ideal growing conditions: performs best in fertile, well-drained soils with full sun or light, open shade. Kentucky bluegrass establishes more slowly from seed than perennial ryegrass or tall fescue and has a relatively high water requirement and a shallow root system. These traits—along with limited tolerance for shade, wear and soil acidity—can limit its use in Tennessee. Many sod growers address establishment challenges by blending seed: a 90:10 (by weight) tall fescue: Kentucky bluegrass seed mixture is commonly used. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass is darker green than many turf-type tall fescues, and its robust rhizomes can increase the tensile strength of sod. When conditions are favorable, a single plant can produce 20 to 50 or more feet of rhizomes in five months. Botanical features and origin: leaf blades are V-shaped or flat with a keel- or boat-shaped tip, often showing a light line on each side of the central vein. Kentucky bluegrass is native to northern Asia; the mountains of Algeria and Morocco; and cool, open sites in Europe. The species’ name reflects the source of commercially produced seed in its early history and its characteristic blue-green color.
