Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a summer perennial native to North America and a key species of the tall-grass prairie that historically covered much of the Great Plains and extended into the southern and eastern United States. This adaptable native tolerates poor soils, flooding and drought, but performs best where annual precipitation is about 30 inches or in irrigated sites with average to wet soils. Plants typically reach 3 to 5 feet in height. Frequently used as an ornamental, switchgrass also provides excellent material for fresh and dried floral arrangements.
