Penncross Creeping Bentgrass Seed - 25 Lbs.
Overview: Penncross is a creeping bentgrass variety developed and released by Penn State University and is the most widely used creeping bentgrass in the golf industry. It produces a dark green turf with an aggressive, upright growth habit and strong vigor, making it well-suited for closely mown putting greens. Climate & Temperature Tolerance: Penncross tolerates both heat and cold and adapts well to a broad range of climates throughout the West. It is capable of withstanding consistent low mowing heights typical of golf green management. Wear, Recovery & Shade: Engineered to endure and recover from the routine wear experienced on golf greens, Penncross handles normal play well; however, excessive traffic or severe damage will necessitate repair and recovery time. Shade tolerance is only moderate — associated conditions such as poor air circulation and saturated soils often further weaken the turf. Soil & Salinity: This variety performs best in moderately acidic soils that retain adequate moisture yet drain well. High salt levels in soil or irrigation water can limit healthy growth, so salinity should be tested and evaluated before specifying Penncross. Establishment: During establishment, newly planted Penncross should be kept consistently moist and watered daily for the first 10-14 days; the sod must not be allowed to dry out. After the root system begins to establish, reduce watering frequency as appropriate. Maintenance Requirements: Creeping bentgrasses demand an intensive, ongoing turf management program immediately after establishment. A greens-type mower is essential for proper mowing, and a disciplined schedule of fertilization plus weed and disease control is required. Due to its high cultural needs, Penncross performs best when maintained by turfgrass professionals experienced in its care.
