SeedRanch Crimson Clover Seed Coated - 20 Lbs

Dixie Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) is a vivid, reseeding winter annual often used along roadsides for highway beautification. It has an erect growth habit with a shallow taproot. The flowers are a bright red, elongated form that frequently exceed two inches in length, and the foliage is dark green with dense hairs. Best suited to heavier, well-drained soils, crimson clover performs poorly on dry, sandy or poorly drained sites. It produces more forage than many other clovers at low temperatures and shows fair tolerance to acidic soils. Common seeding partners include small grains and ryegrass, and it is frequently established into warm-season perennial grass pastures such as bermudagrass and bahiagrass. Under certain management practices it will reseed itself. Seed at 20 to 26 pounds of seed per acre. Most improved crimson clover varieties are adapted to Florida conditions, although spring maturity can vary by variety. Seeds typically germinate in the fall; plants invest early growth into root development and produce very little top growth before February, so little forage is available until then. Delay grazing until plants reach 6-8 inches of growth and terminate grazing when plants are 3-5 inches tall. After establishment, crimson clover grows rapidly until flowering, which generally begins about mid-April. The forage is high quality with both leaves and stems readily consumed; it can be grazed or harvested as hay or silage. To encourage natural reseeding, reduce grazing pressure for about three weeks while plants are in full flower.
