Sensor and image quality: The a7 IV is built around a newly developed 33MP Exmor R full-frame sensor with a back-illuminated layout for improved clarity, lower noise and richer color reproduction. It supports ISO 100–51200 and delivers an estimated dynamic range of approximately 15 stops. Still files can be captured as raw or JPEG, and the camera also records 10-bit HEIF files. Video performance and recording limits: There is no recording time limit, enabling unlimited clip lengths. The body incorporates an enhanced heat-dissipation structure to extend continuous recording times — for example, more than one hour of continuous 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 capture. Two codec options are provided to match different workflows: XAVC HS (HEVC/H.265) for efficient encoding that preserves detail at lower bitrates, and XAVC S-I, an intraframe codec offering steady performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mb/s. Autofocus in video and focusing controls: Real-time Eye AF works while recording video, detecting and tracking human, animal, and bird eyes. To control how focus changes appear on screen, the camera offers seven-step AF transition speed settings plus five-step AF subject shift sensitivity adjustments so you can fine-tune how quickly and smoothly focus moves between subjects. Focus visualization and manual-assist features: Focus Map provides a color-overlay view of depth, similar to peaking, showing which parts of the scene are in front of or behind the focus point according to the selected aperture. The AF Assist function, carried over from Sony’s FX6 digital cine camera, lets you quickly switch into manual focus control to adjust focus position while AF is engaged — a convenient way to shift selective focus between subjects during recording.
